The base layer under a cycling top
A riding-day set starts with a first layer, and on this site that first layer is a merino wool base layer. The cycling top sits above it, and the two layers should be described as two lines in an inquiry, not as one combined 'cycling clothing' line, because the base layer and the cycling top have different colours, sizes and style confirmations. A buyer who describes a riding-day set should therefore start with the base-layer line — wearer group, colours, size wording — and then describe the cycling top line separately.
The base-layer weight guide is a useful companion here, because it explains how to describe a base-layer range in bands, and the same band language can be used to describe the first layer in a riding-day set. The cycling top itself, however, should not be described by a base-layer band figure: the bands belong to the base-layer banner wording, and applying them to a cycling top would be a category error.
Cycling tops and jersey tops: sleeve and identity
Within the cycling category, two choices matter: sleeve and jersey identity. Sleeve means long-sleeve or short-sleeve, and the range lists both for cycling tops. Jersey identity means whether the top is a jersey top or a non-jersey cycling top, and the cycling jersey page covers the jersey styles specifically. A riding-day inquiry should state both choices — for example, 'long-sleeve jersey tops' or 'short-sleeve cycling tops, jersey identity not required' — so that the supplier can confirm the exact tops rather than the cycling category in general.
Those two choices are also the way to keep a cycling order apart from a general tops order. A short-sleeve general top belongs on the t shirt page, a collared top belongs on the polo shirt page, and a hooded top belongs on the hoodie page; a cycling top belongs on the cycling pages only when it is a cycling top in the wool cycling category. Naming the right page at the start prevents an inquiry from being answered with the wrong top family.
Socks and accessories on a riding day
A riding-day set is not complete with tops alone. Socks for the ride and accessories for cold or changeable conditions complete the set, and each of those lines should be stated separately in the inquiry, with its own colours and sizes. The sock selection guide compares the sock uses, and the winter accessories kit guide describes the accessory groups; a riding-day inquiry that borrows its sock line from a ski-day order, or its accessory line from a winter kit order, without stating the riding-day use, is an inquiry that still needs a confirmation round.
The practical point is that a riding-day set is a set of lines, not a single line. First layer, cycling top, socks, accessories — each on its own line, each with its own colours and sizes, and the whole set introduced by the riding-day occasion at the top of the inquiry. That structure is longer than a one-line inquiry, but it is shorter than the clarifying rounds that a one-line inquiry always causes.
Describing a riding-day set in an inquiry
Write the inquiry as a set of lines, in the order the layers are worn: base layer, cycling top, socks, accessories. For the cycling top line, state the sleeve and the jersey identity; for the base-layer line, state the wearer group; for the sock and accessory lines, state the use or group. Then state the colours and size wording per line, any labelling notes, and the target date, and ask for the order figures that apply to the order. A message written in that order can be answered at style level, while a message that only says 'cycling clothing' cannot.
Questions to confirm before ordering
Share your quantity, sizes, colours and target date, and ask for the minimum order quantity and lead time that apply to your order.
- State the base-layer line and the cycling top line separately, each with its own colours and sizes.
- State the sleeve (long-sleeve or short-sleeve) and the jersey identity for the cycling top line.
- State the sock use and the accessory group for the riding-day set, on separate lines.
- State your target date, and ask for the order figures that apply to your order.
